Women’s Day: Business Starter

Allow me to introduce you to Kayla Warner. Kayla is a cat loving, eco-friendly, funny as hell woman who I am lucky to call a friend. Now, Kayla is being showcased on this women’s day series particularly because her passion for natural products has driven her to start her own business, which is currently in pre-launch phase. Besides being female and doing something special, Kayla also battles with her mental health but what makes her remarkable is that regardless of the set backs she always picks herself up and pushes forward.

Kayla developed a brand at the end of last year and was eager to launch at the beginning of this year but sadly was in a traumatic car accident. This accident pushed her back and tried to keep her down but instead, she heaved herself up and re-branded because it felt right to her. This is key here, because Verbena Boutique is authentic and when you follow Kayla on Instagram you will see she is genuine about her learning curve and open about her mistakes. I find this inspiring because it isn’t a highlight reel but real life grappling with starting a business and its impressive stuff!

1.What inspired you to start sharing your story?

Myself. My whole life, I was surrounded by people who thought that mental and physical illnesses were a ‘private’ matter and that nobody wants to hear about it.  The older I got, the more I found out that wasn’t true.  It helps that I have no shame, so I don’t mind over sharing from time to time.

2.What does female empowerment mean to you?

Female empowerment means that you are doing your best.  Don’t try to ‘beat’ the world but also don’t hide from it.  There are some serious issues going on today that need more voices.  Be a voice, but never push yourself too hard.

3.What advice would you give to 18 year old you?

Stop caring what everyone thinks.  It will make your life so much easier.

4.Where do get your daily inspiration from?

Myself. 10 years ago, hell, even 2 years ago, I would have lied and said celebrity accounts and other women.  While those sources do help to push me, I don’t let them dictate my life.  I get up in the morning, look at Instagram, see all the pretty things, and then go about my own day.  There was a time when I would do and say everything ‘right’, but I am a different person.  Nobody in my life taught me to be this way.  I let myself down, a lot, but I also pick myself up.  Nobody else can do that for me.

5.How do you think gender equality needs to improve?

So, so, so, many ways.  I honestly cannot simply break it down.  I think a global shift needs to happen.  Women have all the power in the world, but our past generations keep holding us back.  That needs to change.

6.What three things would you tell young women of the next generation?
Stop competing with each other
Don’t make ‘getting’ men/romantic partners the focus of your life
Dream big! We are so powerful, don’t let anything let you think otherwise!

7.What three things do you wish you could fix in the world?

1. Climate change
2. Climate change
3. …did I mention climate change?
As much as I understand that there are easier things that could be fixed, nothing matters if the world ends.  Seeing all those videos of animals suffering, plastic islands, etc, makes me so sad.  I’m trying my best every day to make my life more ‘eco friendly’.
3.1 For shits and giggles, I would probably throw in anti-vaxxers.  Those people are ruining the lives of so many people and killing children.  My state has issued a ‘State of Emergency’ because of a measles outbreak.  It all could have been prevented by a simple vaccine.

8.What makes you feel grateful everyday?

Ironically/coincidentally my husband.  He is my best friend and he makes me happy to be alive.  He is my support and he encourages everything I want to do.  I couldn’t have asked for a better life partner.  He makes me so grateful for everything I have in my life and helps me see that I am such a strong, and powerful person.

9.If you could have dinner with three inspirational women (dead or alive) who and why?

Ellen DeGeneres

Michelle Obama
Carrie Fisher

10.How do you want to make other women feel with your content?

Understood, hopeful, and confident.
